How to School Without School
The "How To" for Unschoolers, Roadschoolers, Worldschoolers, Homeschoolers
I’m so over feeling like I have to “identify” with some label that a Gen Z-er has created. I am not an unschooler, roadschooler, homeschooler, or worldschooler. These are hashtags that help people like-minded people find one another across social media platforms, but I do not identify with any particular one. I’ve been, and done, them all based on what my children showed me they needed.
I love Waldorf, but I am not a Waldorf homeschooler because I felt the Waldorf curriculums were very limiting and my children were lightyears ahead academically and in their personal interests to stick to the curriculums by age past second grade.
Charlotte Mason has a special place in my heart, but much of the content and methodology also feels outdated and has yet to evolve for the modern family and meet the nights of our current world.
I also love many aspects of the classical curriculum, but found that most homeschoolers that use the classical curriculum are Christian and we are secular. I still love the classical education focus on logic and humanities and draw inspiration from these resources I’m just not necessarily “classical”.
We are us.
Yes, I am a certified EC-4th grade teacher, but I hated the public school system. Prior to becoming a teacher I was a Child Life Specialist and I hold a Masters degree in Professional Counseling and Play Therapy. At my core, I’m a Play-based Child Development Specialist and Educator. There. I did it. I gave you the labels you needed.
Now, let’s get into the HOW behind educating outside of traditional schools without a curriculum.
